Sadhana is a group in Queens that has been organizing cleanups of Queens waterways since 2013. They operate from April to November, and they encourage Hindus, especially youths, to participate in this form of Seva (service). Their work has been covered by local newspapers and The New York Times.
They work in partnership with the Gateway National Recreation Area, local temples, and community-based organizations. Their website explains the project this way: "Project Prithvi is Sadhana's green initiative in which we mobilize Hindus, especially youth, to practice ahimsa (non-violence) by taking care of the environment and being advocates of eco-friendly water worship."
Their philosophy with sacred icons and religious materials left in the waters is to, "Reduce, Reuse, and Repair." They reduce the amount of materials left behind, find ways to reuse some of it, and they literally repair and repaint damaged deities and then try to rehome them.
